Located in Zhao County renowned for history and culture, Zhaozhou Bridge, otherwise known as “Anji Bridge”, is called “Big Stone Bridge” by locals.
Zhaozhou Bridge was built in the Sui Dynasty, with a history of over 1,400 years. Being the earliest and the most intact in the world, the large stone arch bridge, design by Li Chun, an artisan during the Sui Dynasty, adopts a single-hole, arc-shaped structure, and is 50.82 meters long and 9.6 meters wide.
There are two arched holes at the ends of the bridge whose structure is denominated “Open Shoulder Arch”, an invention in the world history of bridge construction. It is a historical and cultural relics unit under state protection, regarded as the twelfth milestone of the international civil engineering history by U.S Civil Engineering Academy in October 1991.
